THE NEW YORK ACADEMY OF TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY

Mission and Goals Statement

The Academy is a multi-disciplinary, New York State, not-for-profit organization, dedicated to the traumatic brain injury (TBI) education. We have national and international members and faculty, and we invite membership or affiliate membership from those with expertise or interest in the field of TBI. We view TBI as an acquired condition stemming from accidents such as impact, electricity, neurotoxic exposure and anoxia, which results in a multi-system disorder, e.g., cerebral, somatic, personality, social, employment, and community participation.

The Goals of the Academy:

  1. To educate the professional, governmental, and public communities of the prevalence and range of outcomes of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). TBI is frequently unrecognized at the time of an accident and thereafter, and thus is often not properly assessed and treated. We offer a forum to increase professional and public awareness for the causes, outcomes, and neurobehavioral consequences of TBI, and to enhance governmental and personal concern for safety. Our conferences make known new concepts and techniques for diagnosis, assessment, and treatment of TBI.
  2. To encourage appreciation by the concerned public that assessment and treatment of persons with TBI requires multi-discipline collaboration. Practitioners are encouraged to be aware of current findings in neurotrauma and neuroscience, acute and chronic emotional and physiological stress, the consequences of unhealed injuries, obscure and late-developing outcomes, and specialized forms of assessment and treatment.
  3. To offer a forum for public discussion and advocacy for health care professionals, accident victims and their families, schools, and other organizations in various areas. Our goals are improved level of care, services, and compensation; proper funding for services; encouragement of legislation mandating special accommodations for individuals of all ages who have incurred TBI. This may involve: Support of legislation; enhanced governmental supervision of agencies and organizations that provide service and compensation to accident victims.
